But... will Toyota charge the police an access fee to shut off the engines on their cars?? www.thedrive.com/tech/43636/toyota-reviewing-key-fob-remote-start-subscription-plan-after-massive-blowbackI'm just kidding, but I hope everyone buying a new car checks to make sure the manufacturer does not have 'subscription plans' for some features... Toyota floated the idea of making the key fob activated remote start a paid subscription. After much blowback, they are 'reconsidering'. I heard BMW wants to make some items, like heated seats, a paid subscription. At least one Mercedes model charges a subscription for an enhanced rear-wheel steering feature. A while ago, a guy bought a used Tesla, and the original owner had the 'full self-drive' option. (I am opposed to this option, but I'm making a point...) When the new owner registered the car, the self-drive option no longer worked. When he contacted Tesla, they said the full self-drive was only valid for the original owner. If the 2nd owner wanted it, he'd have to buy it. Currently, that subscription is $199 per month ($2388 per year), or a one-time payment of (gulp) $10,000! [Update: Tesla is raising the price for Full Self Driving to $12,000 in January of 2022.]--Bob Collum
