Toyota Explores Tie-Up With Lotus To Build Mid-Engined Sports Car Oct 28, 2021
Earlier this week, we brought you news about Nissan’s bold plans to use the Renault Alpine A110’s platform, through the Renault-Nissan Alliance, to build its own mid-engined sports car that would employ a tweaked version of the Rogue’s 1.5-liter turbo with Nissan’s unique e-Power hybrid system bolted on for extra efficiency and power.
Now, we bring you surprising revelations that Toyota is looking into a potential collaboration with Britain’s Lotus—currently owned by China’s Geely—to build a mid-engined sports car that is seen as a successor to the mid-engined MR2 model which was produced in three generations from 1984 through 2007. This proposed tie-up is not a first. Since 2004, Toyota has had a long-standing relationship with Lotus by supplying engines to power its Elise and Evora models among others.
