After getting an extension, I have an inspection due early September on my '05 Elise and it's throwing codes P0171 (Bank 1 too lean) and P0630 (VIN mismatch). Ironically, it's been like that since the day I bought it from EMC, Bethesda and I should've just had Jamie clear it before I picked it up. Hindsight... I know the latter was an issue with the first cars to arrive here and I Lotus used to let you mail them the ECU, they'd reprogram it, send it back and you'd be solid (https://www.tapatalk.com/topic/358153-90765), but they won't allow that now. With the nearest dealership hours away, I'm trying to find a better option. I gave Hillmuth a call after seeing their name here but they don't have the computer to clear the codes. I've also seen PTuning mentioned here as well as on LotusTalk. When I called, they said they've got the computer to make this happen and clear the codes but I'm looking for some validation here before I drive a couple hundred miles to take care of it. Does anyone have experience with PTuning or any local shop (MD/NoVA) having the required gear that you usually only find at an authorized place?

I use PTuning on a regular basis for my tire service and alignments. They are all stand up guys! I cannot say that I know for a fact that they have the required gear to do this particular job. I've cleared my own codes myself using a basic tool, which seems like the P0171 code could be fixed this way (assuming that there isn't actually a problem you need to address). I doubt the VIN code could be taken care of by yourself though. I'll give them a call right now and see what they say.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with them, do you know who you spoke to? I'm going to call their head mechanic after work (who recently cleared some codes on a Polar Blue Exige) and get you some clearer details.

I called earlier today and they said that the foreman has the requisite computer, so I'll give it a shot and let everyone know how it goes as I know this is a common problem. Also helps to know you vouch for them with respect to service. It's tough finding a place to trust in this area.

He sounded younger, but put me on hold to talk to his supervisor/foreman who confirmed that they can clear the codes. If that's the case, then there'd really be no reason to make the haul up to Jersey.

Ok cool, I trust what they say is accurate, but to save both parties the headache I am going to give Justin (the foreman) a call tonight to double check! Where are you coming from??

I appreciate that! I'll be heading down from the Frederick, MD area.

Hey, spoke to Justin last night. He has a pretty robust scanner that has the capability to rewrite VIN numbers. He feels pretty confident that he can accomplish the job, though he has never attempted it on a Lotus. I live in Hyattsville and drive over to Ptuning regularly, I think its worth the trip.

You are the man! I'll schedule the appointment, see how it goes and update the board. It's just a matter of time before someone else in the area throws the code after neglecting to tender the battery over the winter, etc.

Just an update-- PTuning wasn't able to clear the VIN mismatch code. It errored out and just threw a bunch of zeros out there. They did some research and have asked Lotus if they can get the software update to be able to service Lotus fully, but no word back yet. Lotus in the UK got back to me as well and said that the recall work was done with respect to the VIN mismatch, but that the VIN will still clear out on '05s and '06s whenever the battery dies. Bottom-line is that Euromotorcars should've fixed this before I drove off with it years ago, but didn't so I'm off to Park Ave Lotus to redo it. If PTuning ends up getting the software to perform this work, I'll update the board. Thanks again for all the help! -Trent
