The Lotus SUV Is Coming Sooner Than We Thought
OCT 2, 2020 BY MICHAEL BUTLER OFF-ROAD / 12 COMMENTS
A new era will dawn for Lotus by year's end.
Lotus is known the world over for its ability to build sports cars that set the bar in handling dynamics and has recently celebrated 25 years of its beloved Elise, a lightweight two-door sports car that has set the bar for other small sports cars since it was launched. Lotus is currently busy with a number of interesting projects, one of them being the absolutely crazy 2,000 horsepower Evija which is expected to launch later this year, but while fans drool over the new hypercar, Lotus has been hard at work to make its SUV dreams a reality.
According to a recent report from the Dutch publication, AutoWeek, Lotus is planning on releasing its SUV before the end of 2020. The Lambda, as it is called, will be manufactured in China using Volvo parts. The Lambda has been in the works for five years and is set to share the SPA platform with Volvo cars such as the XC90, and Lotus is aiming straight for the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and BMW X6. The SPA platform will give Lotus a wide range of four-cylinder and plug-in hybrid powertrain options to choose from, and an EV version is already in the works.
Former Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales has been quoted as saying that the Lambda will be one of the fastest and most agile performing cars in its segment, but fans will have to take his word for it as no technical details have been shared with the public. Wuhan, most famous for its ties to the recent pandemic, will be the manufacturing base for the new SUV. There has been no word whether or not the Lambda will be coming to the US, but as one of the world's largest car markets, it would be a smart move. With cars such as the Cayenne Coupe offering a brilliant overall driving experience, Lotus will have to bring its A-game to stand a chance in this cut-throat segment.
