The Lotus Cortina was the first major example of Lotus taking a production car - in this case, Ford of England's then-new Cortina - and doing major upgrades on the engine and suspension. Ford wanted to give a bit of a boost to the image of their new family sedan, and Colin Chapman developed suspension modifications, and a new engine - the Lotus-Ford Twincam later used in Elans and Europas. The result was a car that was used very successfully in competition - Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart, among many others, had great success with this model.
